Contrary to what we think, professional or semi-professional digital audio is a technology as old as the first commercial analog formats. As far back as the 70s, it was possible to record digitally with 1s and 0s on VHS, and then on SVHS or even HI8 tapes. DAT was also a format that Sony had been able to foresee as a replacement for the audio cassette, but the cheaper and easier-to-make CD supplanted all this diversity of formats.

Whether you have 8 tracks recorded on an ADAT, or a stereo master on a DAT, these will be converted into digital files that you can easily share or copy-and-paste on your smartphone or with former band members.

You’ll receive the files in WAV, FLAC or AIFF. What’s more. If you wish, a pro mix of yours DATs can be make, for example, to enhance dynamics and master (mastering) all the digitized files together. In the case of an ADAT, it’s possible to work with the 8 separate tracks to give space to each instrument and enhance stereo spatialization. Just because these files are vintage doesn’t mean they don’t deserve contemporary mixing treatment, the original conversions will remain available.
